Renata Steiner is a Brazilian Private Law professor, independent arbitrator, and legal expert. Before starting her own practice, Mrs. Steiner worked as counsel in two full-service law firms in São Paulo and Curitiba and as a partner of a boutique law firm in São Paulo, whose main focus lies on arbitral disputes and legal reports in Private Law matters.

Mrs. Steiner’s major area of expertise relates to commercial disputes, especially commercial contracts (domestic and international), construction contracts, corporate dispute and also englobes real estate disputes and Succession Law. Within these areas, Mrs. Steiner focuses her practice in questions related to damages quantification. Mrs. Steiner has been acting constantly as chair, co-arbitrator and sole arbitrator in several arbitral proceedings seated in Brazil, either as party-appointed arbitrator, by appointment of her fellow arbitrators or by the administering institution.

Mrs. Steiner has experience as arbitrator in arbitral proceedings administered by Câmara de Arbitragem e Mediação da Câmara de Comércio Brasil-Canadá (CAM-CCBC), Câmara FGV de Mediação e Arbitragem (FGV), Câmara de Mediação e Arbitragem da Associação Comercial do Paraná (ARBITAC), Câmara de Arbitragem do Mercado (CAM-B3), Câmara de Arbitragem e Mediação CINDES/FINDES, Câmara de Mediação e Arbitragem Empresarial (CAMARB), Câmara de Mediação e Arbitragem CIESP/FIESP (CMA), Centro Brasileiro de Mediação e Arbitragem (CBMA), Centro de Arbitragem e Mediação da Câmara Americana de Comércio para o Brasil – São Paulo (CAM-AMCHAM) e Câmara de Arbitragem e Mediação da Federação das Indústrias do Paraná (CAMFIEP). She has conducted proceedings in English and under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. She has acted as an arbitrator’s assistant in domestic and international proceedings. As an expert, Mrs. Steiner has experience in cross-examination and her legal expert reports have been presented in arbitral proceedings before the ICC Court of Arbitration and CAM-CCBC, in State Court disputes, and in pre-litigation and risk assessment analysis. In 2022, she was ranked by Guia Análise Advocacia Mulher conducted by Análise Editorial as one of the most prominent female professionals in Brazil in the fields of arbitration and in the economic-financial sector.

Mrs. Steiner is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and is a member of the body of arbitrators of CAMARB, CBMA, FGV, ARBITAC, CAMFIEP, CAMAGRO, CAMESC and Centro Internacional de Arbitraje – Cámara de Bélgica y Luxemburgo en el Perú.

Mrs. Steiner is from Curitiba, South Brazil, and lives in São Paulo since 2017. She holds a PhD Degree from the University of São Paulo (2016) and was a visiting Scholar during her PhD studies in Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, in Munich, Germany. Her PhD thesis was granted honorable mention by the Civil Law Department of the University of São Paulo and was published as a book named “Reparação de danos: interesse positivo e interesse negativo” [Damages: expectation and reliance interest] (Quartier Latin, 2018). She also holds a Master’s degree in Private Law (2009) and a Bachelor of Laws degree (2007) from Universidade Federal do Paraná. During her Masters’ studies, she was a visiting researcher in Augsburg University, in Germany. Her master’s thesis was also published as a book, “Descumprimento contratual: boa-fé e violação positiva do contrato” [Breach of contract: violation of good faith] (Quartier Latin, 2013).

Besides both her academic thesis, Mrs. Steiner is also a coauthor of the book “Compra e venda internacional de mercadorias: a Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre Compra e Venda Internacional de Mercadorias (CISG)” (Ed. Fórum, 2016, coauthor Paulo Nalin), which aims to introduce the CISG to Brazilian readers.

Since 2020 Mrs. Steiner is a Permanent Professor of Private Law in Undergraduate and Graduate programs in Fundação Getúlio Vargas em São Paulo (FGV-SP). Her teaching career began in 2009, when she was approved in a public contest for a chair as substitute professor (temporary professor) at Universidade Federal do Paraná. Since then, Mrs. Steiner has been teaching undergrads and graduate students in Law and International Business Schools and has been a Permanent Professor at Universidade Positivo (2009-2011), Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (2012), FAE Centro Universitário (2015-2016) and Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, in São Paulo (since 2017). The brief pauses in her teaching career were due to her studies in Germany and in her PhD in São Paulo and, more recently, due to maternity leaves. Mrs. Steiner is also a proud mom of two beautiful children.

Mrs. Steiner is cofounder of AGIRE | Direito Privado em Ação, a weekly academic newsletter about Private Law. She is the scientific coordinator of the workshop series regarding breach of contract, damages, and arbitration hosted by NewGen at CAM-CCBC. Mrs. Steiner is also member of the following associations Instituto de Direito Privado (IDiP) [Private Law Institute], Instituto de Estudos Culturalistas (IEC) [Institute for Cultural Studies] and Instituto Brasileiro de Estudos de Responsabilidade Civil (IBERC) [Brazilian Institute for the Studies of Torts].

Her native language is Portuguese, and she speaks fluent English and German. She also has knowledge of Spanish and Italian.
